Hey!!
After spending the last 3 days creating http://www.SpandyAndy.com I decided I need to start ‘stretching’ all over the city. I’ve got a great group of fans at English Bay, but it is time for Spandy to conquered other busy parts of the city. I’m going to update my schedule in a couple days once I figure out the best spots/ best days/ best times. View Schedule

If anyone has some recommendations of where I should go and when, that would be spantastic! Also, if you know of any events coming up where there would be piles of people outdoors, let me know!

Here are some locations I am considering:
Grandville St.
All Skytrain stations
Science World
Main St.
Kits Beach
Wreck Beach

Thanks in advance,
Spandy

Spandy's Wonderful Whirlwind Weekend

June 16, 2009 - 11:38 am No Comments

Hey there members of spandex anonymous. I had such a crazy last few days with SpandyAndy. Thursday I paid for a “Spandy Mobiel”, Friday I was forced to stop by the Park Ranger who grabbed the Vancouver Police and Saturday/Sunday I had some of the best shows I have ever had!

The Spandy Mobiel is getting new batteries and won’t be on the road until June 24th, but I can’t wait to start cruising with the 90′s hits pumping. I’m looking for a sequence cape too. Does anyone know where I can get a cool cape or someone who makes costumes?

Friday I decided I would do an evening dance at English Bay. I set up my boombox near the entrance as usual and guess who had to come ruin the fun: Van Park Danger. That is his facebook name anyway. He decided to go as far as become a fan of SpandyAndy and then comment on my status talking about my busking permit, and threaten me with a $200 fine.
Spandy's Permit

After he hopped out of his truck and put his nice shiny orange jacket on he told me to turn off the music. I asked him why and he decided that people in the buildings on the other side of the street (at least 100 meters away) were complaining. I told him how I have been doing this for 3 weeks with no problems. During our argument the police walk by doing their regular patrols of the Bay. Van Park Danger grabs the cops and tells them I have to stop. The cop asks for my busking license and I show it to them no problem. Then Van Danger tells them of the complaints… the police run all this bull with me saying they will compromise. I am allowed to perform for 15min with the music at “conversation” level. I laughed at that “compromise”. I asked him “how about 45 min?” Then the cop starts getting mad and saying “compromise”. I said, “I understand what compromising is, but your not doing it!” Long story cut medium, I had to stop. Mom’s came up and started yelling at the police. I think they are getting more complaints for stopping me then the imaginary one they got for me being there.

Here is a video of the encounter: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=96696312129 thanks to Kiesha!

Then the weekend came. SpandyAndy was a little nervous to go to the beach again. This is the best spot for my show though. It has the right kind of people, perfect place to relax and listen to music, and the pathway with all the pedestrians. On Sunday the Park Ranger and a new female ranger side kick showed up. He told me to shut off my music and there was ZERO amplified music aloud at the beach. I told him I compromised with the police (who had already walked by twice today). He didn’t care and said, “shut it off”. Then the crowd went CRAZY. Everyone started cheering and could see the frustration I was going through. The female park ranger said to the other ranger, “I think we should go.” Ranger Danger didn’t care and said again, “NO AMPLIFIED MUSIC”. Then they start walking away and everyone goes crazy. Of course with a flick of a switch the music is going and everyone is enjoying their day again. It was awesome to have everyone’s support!

Spandy - Mid Air Jump

My batteries died a couple songs later, people asked me to run to the store and get another set. I’m so glad I did. Everything was working great and the energy was all smiles and laughter.

All in all it was wonderful whirlwind of a weekend. A film crew did a brief interview of me as well. I should be back at the Bay next weekend. Hope to see you there and thanks again for all your support.

Keep Dancing,
Spandy

I’ll paste the list of songs I currently use, but I’m looking for some more recent hits or hits from the 90′s that I am missing. These are not all the songs, but an idea of what I like to dance to.

Rule Breaker

Hey there my shiny friends!
What a crazy Sunday Spandy had. I started off the day in Red Deer with a bit of an upset stomach from the wedding the night before and I ended it with 5 hours of grooving at English Bay.

After visiting Red Deer and seeing a lot of people from school, it gave me even more drive to follow my dreams in Vancouver. Everyone had the same old thing to say. Maybe they changed jobs or were on there 4th year of school, but nothing had really changed. Sears moved to the south end and the food court expanded to include a Korean place. Spandy realized he wants to make an impact in his life. I want to enjoy everyday and bring as many smiles to the world as possible! I’ve just begun my mission. I had lots of support from my home town and a few red necks I really want to prove myself too. I have to say how much my parents rock! They support Spandy 100% and even gave me a ride to the airport so I could catch an earlier flight and perform today.

Once I arrive it was straight to English Bay. I set up my signs at the entrance and as Will Smith would say, “got jiggy with it”. After an hour or so I had a nice supportive crowd. They were diggin my old school beats and we were all having a good time. Around 2 and a half hours in when my show was getting amazing Mr. Park Ranger had to show up. After telling me about 5 different rules I broke and how he gave a ticket out last week, I had to stop. Everyone started booing and yelling at Ranger, but there was nothing I could do. The ticket would be around $150 and i would still have to stop anyway. Here are some of the laws I broke;

1. No amplified music. (I can’t have a boombox)
2. No signage aloud. (After adding the signs my show was at a whole new level)
3. Obstructing the walk way. (A huge part of Spandy is interacting with people)
4. I can’t busk longer then 1 hour. (My show needs time to build a crowd)
5. Spandy’s way to dam cool. (Someone told me that :-D )

I’m not sure really what to do. After I packed up my stuff several people came up to me and told me this is bullshavic. (not the Russians) Even had some people saying how Canada isn’t a free country like it entitles. I think I am just going to continue doing what I’m doing. If I have enough support out there every time I perform. They can’t really do much. Everyone enjoys having a good time and if they don’t want to watch they can easily keep walking.

Thank you everyone for supporting Spandy and it is because of you I won’t quit!

I also want to thank the little girls that fed me all day. They gave me 3 granola bars, an orange, and a nice cold water. Also thanks to the dancer who gave me a wicked sequence head band. (Message me ;-) I can’t find you lol)

Crack or Comedy

June 2, 2009 - 7:10 pm No Comments

Hey Yall!
I took Monday off to rest my pelvis and I was back out there today. I decided to head back to the Art Gallery on Robson and try my luck there. After asking the bus driver if my outfit was good enough for a free ride and him accepting, I was on my way.

I brought both my signs with me because I learned over the weekend that you really need to let people know you are sane to a degree. I set them up near my boombox and started the show.

After the 3 hour show, I sat back and talked to a few people that were on the stairs watching. They told me that most people, including them, thought I was a crack head at first and then realized I was pro skillz dancing and a show was taking place. Then we realized how many bums and nuts were hanging out here.
A student came by and took some amazing photos and I made a few bucks so it was still alright, but Spandy realized that his home is English Bay. Since I am heading back to Alberta for a wedding I won’t be able to perform this upcoming weekend which stinks, but Spandy will be back at the Bay the one after I PROMISE!

Keep on groovin,
